A food craving is an intense desire for a specific food. This desire can seem uncontrollable, and a person may feel as though they cannot satisfy their hunger until they get that particular food.
What is addiction?
Addiction is a psychological and physical inability to stop consuming a chemical, drug, activity, or substance, even though it is causing psychological and physical harm.
The term addiction does not only refer to dependence on substances such as heroin or cocaine. A person who cannot stop taking a particular drug or chemical has a substance dependence.
Do not worry, I am not trying to compare a drug with any food substance, these are the basic definitions of the two words i.e., ‘Cravings’ and ‘Addiction’. Did you find anything common between the above two definitions? Well, I did. ‘The inability to control oneself from a particular substance.’ But, why this inability occurs? Does this lead to any nutritional deficiency, when considering food? We humans, belong to the animal kingdom, do any other animal in a jungle have any kind of food cravings?
Food cravings occur because of two reasons:
1. Inadequate nutrients in the previous meal.
2. Addiction to any kind of food.
So, before we dig deep into this topic, it’s better to know about the two hormones which are called ‘leptin’ and ‘ghrelin’, where one tells you to stop eating and the other asks you to eat something. And according to logic and science, one needs to listen to them, is it? So, why do we gain fat, whenever we try to eat according to them? What makes these hormones misfire? Do we need to count our food?
Well, the answer is no. This problem starts on a hormonal level, which means it’s not the misfiring of hormones but the misconceptions we have about our eating habits. As we’ll know that human belongs to the animal kingdom, and I haven’t seen any animal in a jungle counting his/her food, but they still seem to be amazingly fit. Might be they aren’t as smart as we humans are, or as stupid as us. The inadequate nutrients in the previous meal lead to food cravings. This simply means that the meal which you just had was not able to make or keep you satiated for a longer period. Which makes our fuel weak. And here where the food cravings or binge eating starts. The food could not provide all the nutrients which your body needed, not the quantity. A food highly dense in nutrients will never let you crave for anything if you fill yourself with it. What are the food options which are highly dense with nutrients? Well, we’ll discuss this later. But for now, the answer to the question is yes.
